Things to do Before Changing Your Career

The days of a job for life are now long gone. Nowadays, people move between jobs and careers much more frequently than in the past. But, there is no doubt quitting one career and embarking on something entirely different can feel like a significant decision to make and may even be a bit overwhelming. If you are considering taking the leap and leaving your current career behind, you can make the transition a lot easier by carrying out plenty of preparation beforehand. Adequate preparation helps you to decide whether a career move is the right choice for you and also enables you to ensure you have everything needed to make your new career move a success. Here are some of the things you can do before changing your job to make the process run smoothly:

Research

Researching your new career and finding out as much as you can about it is vital. The more prepared you are, the quicker you will be able to overcome barriers to entry. During your research, it is helpful to find out which qualifications you need, which skills are essential for performing your new role, and what experience is required. Once you have this information, you will be ready to start making preparations ready for your career change.

Build Your Skills

Having the relevant skills is essential when applying for any job, and the more skills you have, the more likely your application will be successful. The skills you need may be very specific, such as knowing how to use a particular piece of software, or they may be more general interpersonal skills such as being able to communicate effectively. But, being able to demonstrate you possess these skills is crucial. So, before you start applying for jobs, you may find it beneficial to take some relevant training courses using a company such as STL Learning to help you acquire the skills you need.

Gain Experience

Do you have the transferable experience that will benefit your new career, and do you have the specific experience needed to hit the ground running in your new job? If you lack the relevant experience you need, there may be opportunities for you to gain this by carrying out work experience or becoming a volunteer. Looking for opportunities to gain experience can make all the difference when applying for jobs and make your application really stand out.

Prepare Your CV

If you have been stuck using the same CV for years, it is likely to be relevant to your current career but not so great for your new one. Adapting your CV for your new career choice gives you the opportunity to include information that is most relevant to your new career. You will also be able to include the details of the relevant experience and training you have gained while actively pursuing your new career choice. Having this information on your CV demonstrates your commitment to your new career and the enthusiasm you have for your new role.
